Immerse yourself in antiquity as you head to the circle of Stonehenge, one of the most intriguing sites in the UK. Situated on a vast plain, Stonehenge is truly impressive. It is shrouded in magic and mystery, and many believe this sacred site emanates a special atmosphere. Radiocarbon dating reveals this incredible monument was built around 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic period. The question of who built Stonehenge remains largely unanswered, although many now attribute the monument to the Druids.
Upon arrival at the Visitor Center, see the Neolithic Life exhibition, which includes a 360-degree time-lapse cinema as well as 250 ancient artifacts and objects from the Neolithic period.
Then, either join the shuttle or walk down to the site and make your way along the encircling pathway for views of the stones.
Leave the unsolved mysteries of silent Stonehenge to the mists of time as you return to Portsmouth with much to contemplate.
Notes:
Travel time to Stonehenge is approximately 1.45 hours each way. Wear comfortable walking shoes. An electronic audio guide can be downloaded onto your phone; bring earphones. The Stones are behind a fenced area to protect their fabric and can be seen from a distance; there is no opportunity to touch or walk within the Stone Circle. A short shuttle bus ride from the Visitor Center takes you to the Stone Circle. Your time at the stones is unguided. Refreshments are not included; there is a café located within the Visitor Center where you can purchase a snack (at your own expense).
