The city of Kristiansand evokes the atmosphere of yesteryear, with small white cottages and a grid pattern of streets. It is set between the harbor on two sides and the Otra River on the third side.
You will drive past the old fortress of Christiansholm, built in 1672, and many delightful old houses typical of southern Norway. Visit the Kristiansand Museum -- one of the many open-air museums in Norway -- to see a reconstructed city street and old farmhouses from the Setesdal Valley.
In the village of Sogne, watch for productive farms, breathtaking sea views and an exterior view of the church of Sogne.
Stop briefly in picturesque Høllen en route back to Mandal and the ship. This charming fishing village and marina was once a rough-and-ready shipping port for timber that was floated down the river to the mouth of the River Søgne .
Notes
Terrain includes grass, uneven ground, and high thresholds to enter some of the houses at the museum.
