Board a comfortable motorcoach for a 45-minute drive through scenic West Zealand to the thousand-year-old Viking fortress of Trelleborg.
Trelleborg, built in AD 980, was one of five ring forts in Denmark and was the brainchild of King Harald Bluetooth. Bluetooth captured the throne when his predecessor, Greycloak, met with an unfortunate accident. His mission to unify Norway and Denmark into a single, mighty Norse kingdom made him a deeply unpopular fellow. Rebellion and civil war followed, led by Bluetooth's own son. Learn more about the kingdom's turbulent, but compelling, history and about how this impressive fort was built, its defenses, and what everyday life was like for the approximately 500-700 Vikings who lived here.
You will also see what a traditional Viking longhouse looked like — surprisingly comfortable for its inhabitants.
Notes:
Tour requires approximately two hours of walking required. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
