Today you will visit a local Country Farm. Glenshane Farm is a working sheep farm owned by Jamese McCloy a fourth generation sheep farmer, who is passionate about creating authentic, immersive experiences while also focused on preserving the epic landscape around him. The farm is located on the Glenshane Pass, one of the highest mountain roads in Ireland and from here you can see Slieve Gallion, the Mournes and Slemish Mountain where our Patron Saint of Ireland Saint Patrick shepherded as a young man. Jamese McCloy is a shepherd, sheep farmer and a highly respected local shearer who delights in farming the fields he has loved since he was a child. Jamese’s standards are as high as the mountain peaks around him, so he aims to give the warmest welcome in Ireland and will settle for nothing less.
On your visit you will spend time out in the fields and fresh air helping Jamese to herd the flock by learning how to issue instructions to his talented working dogs.
Continue your journey and take a break for some storytelling and a hearty lunch at Friel’s Historic Bar and Restaurant, established in 1835. An award winning, Irish Bar and Restaurant nestled in the heart of the South Derry countryside in the picturesque village of Swatragh. It had various owners throughout the 1800s when it was previously a coaching inn, hotel, and Post Office. It was also used as a dispensary and surgery, where many a tonic was given and ailment cured. During the Great Famine (an Gorta Mo´ r) in the 1840s, Friel’s was used as a soup kitchen. The original famine pot is on display. Learn about Dr Mooney and the famine and the Soup kitchen and immerse yourself in the history and atmosphere of Friels, 5th generation traditional pub.
All too soon your visit comes to an end, and you will make your journey back to where your ship awaits.
