Visit the historic city of Londonderry, more commonly referred to locally by its original name of Derry, which means Oak Grove. It was founded by St Colmcille in 546.
Departing the pier in Greencastle, begin with a drive along the west bank of Lough Foyle, taking you to the 'second city' of Northern Ireland. You will cross the Foyle Bridge, a span bridge built in 1984, to the east bank, known as the Waterside. Stop for spectacular views of the city and surrounding region. Continuing across the Craigavon Bridge, an 18th-century double-decker bridge, you will enter the ancient walled city.
Derry is the only city in the United Kingdom with its historical walls still intact. They are approximately one mile in circumference. Each stretch of these sturdy walls carries its own tale and offers different views of Derry's rejuvenated city center. Visit St Columb's Cathedral. Built in 1633 it is the city of Londonderry's oldest building. Over its almost 400 years of history, it has withstood not only the elements, but also during the last few decades suffered quite extensive damage by terrorist bombs -- particularly to the historic stained-glass windows.
Afterwards, some free time is allowed for shopping or enjoying refreshments (at your own expense) at one of the city's traditional pubs. Alternatively, why not walk the walls independently or visit the Tower Museum?
Re-join your motorcoach and guide for the drive to Grianan of Aileach -- Donegal's most impressive and intriguing ancient monument at the entrance to the Inishowen Peninsula. This circular stone fort occupies the top of Greenan Mountain and was built around 1700 BC. At one time it was the residence of the Kings of Ulster -- the O'Neills. The most memorable feature of the fort, however, is its magnificent vantage point, which affords stunning views in every direction. Snap some photos of this impressive site before returning to Greencastle.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers so you are comfortable despite the inevitable changeability of Ireland's weather. Participants must stand/walk for up to 45 minutes at the cathedral. The terrain at Grianan of Aileach (photo stop only) makes it inaccessible for guests using a wheelchair.
