Visit the historic city of Londonderry, more commonly referred to locally as Derry and founded by St Colmcille in AD 546.
A drive along the west bank of Lough Foyle introduces you to the "second city" of Northern Ireland. You will cross the Foyle Bridge and pause for a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding region. Crossing the 18th-century double-decker Craigavon Bridge, you will enter Derry's ancient walled city.
Derry is the only city in the United Kingdom with its one-mile circumference city walls still intact. Visit St Columb's Cathedral. Built in 1633, it is Derry's oldest building, despite some extensive damage from bombings during The Troubles.
Afterward, enjoy some free time for shopping, walking the walls independently, or purchasing refreshments (at your own expense).
Rejoin your motorcoach for the drive to Grianan of Aileach — Donegal's most impressive and intriguing ancient monument on the Inishowen Peninsula. This circular stone fort perches atop Greenan Mountain and was built around 1700 BC. At one time, it was the residence of the Kings of Ulster — the O'Neills. Its most memorable feature is its magnificent vantage point, which affords stunning views in every direction. Snap some photos of this impressive site before returning to Greencastle.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat. Tour requires standing/walking for up to 45 minutes at the cathedral. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
