Gdansk's fame stems from its thousand-year history, its considerable status as a Hanseatic port, the place where World War II began, and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement.
Walk through the Old Town to see the ornamental 16th-century Golden Gate and a 15th-century merchant's palace. Stroll down Long Street and take in the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture of the Town Hall. Pause to admire Neptune's Fountain and step inside St Mary's Basilica. This is the world's largest brick church, with a capacity of 25,000. Check out the multiple chapels, elaborate altarpiece, stone floor with ancient tombstones and the 15th-century astronomical clock.
You will have about one hour of free time in the city. Leave yourself time to purchase lunch (at your own expense) or to shop for art, crafts and souvenirs, including amber jewelry.
Notes:
Lunch is not included. You will have time to purchase lunch at your own expense during the tour. Participants must walk approximately 10 minutes from the coach parking area to the Old Town of Gdansk. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
