Gdansk's fame stems from its thousand-year history, its considerable status as a Hanseatic port, the place where World War II began, and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement.
Walk through the Old Town to see the ornamental 16th-century Golden Gate and a 15th-century merchant's palace. Stroll down Long Street and take in the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture of the Town Hall. Pause to admire Neptune's Fountain and step inside St Mary's Basilica. This is the world's largest brick church, with a capacity of 25,000. Check out the multiple chapels, elaborate altarpiece, stone floor with ancient tombstones and the 15th-century
astronomical clock.
Use your free time to shop for art, crafts and souvenirs, including amber jewelry.
Meet a group of pierogi connoisseurs at a local restaurant. Their mission is to engage you in a fun and delicious cooking class. The chef imparts expert knowledge of Polish dumplings (pierogi), sharing closely guarded recipes with you. This is a hands-on and slow-paced class, enhanced by interesting stories about the culinary traditions of Poland.
Over the course of 1½ hours, you'll make different types of pierogi — two savory and one sweet. Enjoy the delicious results of your efforts and take your new skills home to impress your family and friends. You'll also have the opportunity to sample some traditional Polish liqueurs, such as Goldwasser, which has been produced in Gdansk since 1598.
