A short coach ride brings you to the Castle of Bodrum. The Knight of Rhodes plundered the magnificent Mausoleum of Halicarnassus -- one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World -- and used its magnificent sun-bleached stone to build the castle.
You will also visit the Sunken Boat Museum, whose artifacts were found underwater and date from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages. Remnants of cargo from a 13th-century BC Syrian trade ship are on display. The Carian Princess section houses a beautiful gold tiara.
Next, you will walk to the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus -- or, more accurately, to its ruins. This is Bodrum's oldest antiquity. Artemisia II built the tomb in honor of her husband, King Mausolos. Have you made the connection? Yes, the modern generic term for a large tomb is derived from his name. When it stood among the Seven Wonders, the structure was more than 150 feet tall and featured frescos and other decorative objects. Some of these are now on display at the London Museum.
