Begin your excursion with a short shuttle transfer by school bus to the top of Signal Hill. From there, you will set out on an approximately one-mile guided hike.
Take in spectacular panoramic views of the coastal landscape and captivating scenery of one of Canada's busiest working ports -- considered by many to be North America's first city. Discover the area's most popular hiking trail while descending almost 500 feet in elevation to sea level.
Admire the harbor narrows and the Atlantic Ocean, smell the salty sea air and hear gulls as they wheel overhead. You'll see many kinds of wildflowers and berry bushes (in season) and a variety of birds, from small songbirds and seabirds to bald eagles.
At the end of the trail, head back toward the ship on foot via the New World's first European street. Your excursion ends at Harbourside Park -- birthplace of the British Empire. Enjoy the storyboards and a photo opportunity with statues of Provincial dogs. Return to the ship on foot, just 500 yards away.
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
Participants must be physically fit. This hike covers approximately 1.9 miles (3 km) over well-established pathways and steps. The hike is over uneven terrain, with many loose rocks, 300+ wooden steps, and high clifftop trails. Some sections of the trail are narrow and adjacent to steep drops. Not advisable for persons with a fear of heights or vertigo. Sections of the trail climb very steeply for several minutes. No restrooms are available during the hike. Wear sturdy, closed-toe, non-skid walking/hiking shoes. Tour operator reserves the right to deny participation on the basis of unsuitable footwear. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Waiver must be signed, and medical conditions disclosed.
