Your Gaelic adventure begins with a scenic drive through the Bras d’Or Lakes region on the way to the Highland Village, a living history museum that brings Nova Scotia’s Gaelic heritage to life. Spread across 43 acres, the village features 11 historic buildings that reflect Gaelic settlement from the late 1700s through the 1800s.
Once you arrive, you’ll have time to explore at your own pace, meet costumed interpreters, and learn about traditional skills such as weaving, quilting, and rug hooking. You can visit rare heritage animals, including Soay sheep—one of the oldest domesticated sheep breeds in northern Europe—and long-haired Highland cattle. Throughout your visit, staff share stories, demonstrate daily life in early Gaelic communities, and even teach a few Gaelic phrases. Guests interested in their own Celtic ancestry may inquire about the museum’s genealogical resources. After your visit, you’ll return to the ship along the same scenic route.
Notes:
For safety and comfort, guests must be able to board the motor coach independently or travel with a companion who can assist them. Some areas of the village include uneven, crushed gravel or unpaved walkways that may be challenging for certain individuals. Guides are not permitted to provide physical assistance to guests.
