Elmastukwek is a Mi'kmaw term meaning "going away from the river." Corner Brook's Elmastukwek First Nation belongs to the wider Mi'kmaw nation known as Mi'kma'ki. Its peoples inhabit all the Atlantic provinces (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island), as far south as the Gaspé Peninsula in Québec and Maine in the USA.
Travel around the horseshoe-shaped Bay of Islands with a brief stop at Crow Gulch, where your guide shares insights into the challenges faced by the Mi'kmaw community that once thrived here. This narrative encourages reflection on the social legacy of colonization, and the importance of acknowledging difficult histories as a part of the healing process.
View the vibrant Wjipiskl mural by Chief Jenny Brake of the Qualipu First Nation. This colorful art piece represents Indigenous roots and a connection to Newfoundland communities, past, present, and future.
Now, there's time for some socializing over a fascinating culinary experience. Among the unique flavors you'll sample are moose tacos, smoked Arctic Char, and local seafood (in season), such as cod, mussels, and crab. Learn about traditional preparation methods and how the food connects people with culture.
Share your own reflections and experiences as you return to the starting point of your journey.
