Discover the Tablelands of Gros Morne -- one of the few places on Earth where the planet's mantle is visible.
Start your journey with an approximately 2 hour drive to Gros Morne National Park, overlooking Bonne Bay. This is a great place to get acquainted with the landscape.
Set out on a leisurely walk to the "top of the bottom of the Earth." What does this mean? It means you will see orange rocks from the middle layer of planet Earth, pushed upwards into place here when continental plates collided almost half a billion years ago. This barren landscape is one of the best examples of the Earth's mantle -- exposed for you to see our planet essentially in its naked state.
Stop at the local community of Trout River for a tasty lunch of soup and sandwiches before returning to the ship.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring a light jacket or sweater. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses, wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. The walk is approximately 60-80 minutes. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Travel time between the ship and Gros Morne National Park is approximately 2 hours each way.
