Come explore the beautiful Bay of Islands, charted by Captain James Cook in the late 1700s.
The local mountain chain you'll see here is part of the Appalachian Mountains that start in the southern USA and extend this far north. These rocks are more than a billion years old.
Relatively new (but still somewhat senior) coastal communities will welcome you -- Little Port, Lark Harbour, John's Beach and York Harbour. Bottle Cove was a French fishing station in the early 16th century, while Basque fishermen used Governors Island from the early 1500s. This bay has deep water, steep wood-covered hills, and barren, lofty peaks.
There will be plenty of photo stops and even time for a 'mug up' and browsing for souvenirs among the local folks at Lark Harbour.
Notes:
Bring cash for souvenir shopping from a small selection of local crafts at the refreshment stop; debit and credit cards are not accepted.
