Discover an important part of St Anthony's history as you embark on a 20-minute hike to the top of Tea House Hill. As you hike the well-groomed trail, only a few minutes' walk from the pier, your guide will introduce you to Dr Grenfell. This regional hero made a lifelong commitment to the people of St Anthony. In 1882, he pledged to "work on a coast that was ice-blocked and inaccessible for several months of the year." Grenfell was devoted to improving the lives of local families as he practiced medicine, built hospitals, established schools and orphanages, and, when not working on the coast, traveled to the UK and throughout North America looking for support and labor.
Along the way, you will stop at several spectacular lookouts on the trail, including the original site of the historical Tea House and the burial site of Dr Grenfell himself.
At the Grenfell House Museum, the family home of the Grenfells during their time in Newfoundland, step back in time as you explore the different rooms and see furniture, art and other items belonging to the family.
Your guide will introduce you to the Grenfell Interpretation Center, dedicated to preserving and showcasing Dr Grenfell's legacy in the region through interpretive panels and displays. Here, you will spend the rest of the excursion exploring on your own. Don't miss visiting the handicrafts/gift shop to browse for locally-produced souvenirs and mementos of your time in St Anthony before walking back to the pier.
Notes:
This is a moderate hike for physically-fit guests. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The tender dock is only 25 feet from the Grenfell Interpretation Center. Approximately the last 60 minutes of the excursion will be dedicated to free time for individual exploration at the Interpretation Center.
