Spend a day in the 18th century at Colonial Williamsburg and learn how America's quest for Independence was born.
Leave Norfolk for a one-hour ride and cross the Hampton Roads -- one of the world's largest natural harbors -- en route to Virginia's historic peninsula, home to the historic towns of Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg. The latter was established in 1633 as a defensive outpost against Native American incursion.
Tucked inside the colonial district of the modern city of Williamsburg, the nation's largest living history museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Set out on a one-hour guided walking tour before free time for your own self-guided adventure. Sprawled across 301 acres, Williamsburg boasts original 18th-century structures, including hundreds of houses, shops and public outbuildings, many of which are reconstructed on their original foundations. Inside the stately replica Governor's Palace, you'll find archeological artifacts, fine British and American antiques, Jefferson's drawings and General Assembly records.
The foundation of the handsome Capitol building dates back to 1619; step inside to see an interior meticulously restored to its former glory.
Stroll down Duke of Gloucester Street in the footsteps of Patrick Henry, James Madison, George and Martha Washington, Thomas and Martha Jefferson. Merchants Square boasts more than 40 shops, a number of restaurants and an art gallery.
Shop, dine and take photos before the ride back to the pier.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. This tour includes admission to the various historic attractions in Williamsburg, as well as free shuttle buses. You'll have approximately five hours to explore this vast historic district independently.
