Jamestown and Yorktown are two names synonymous with the birth of the United States. One is famous as England's first colony, and the other is known as the young country's last major battle against the British Crown. Each played a pivotal role in the early days of America.
Cross the waterway known as the Hampton Roads, one of the world's largest natural harbors, on a one-hour panoramic drive. Your destination is Colonial National Historic Park, connecting the historic towns of Jamestown and Yorktown.
At the Jamestown Settlement, take a two-hour guided tour of the Visitor Center and Museum that chronicles the early beginnings of England's first permanent colony in the New World. Costumed historical interpreters describe and demonstrate daily life in the early 17th century. Stroll among the impressive exhibits, which include portraits, documents, furnishings, toys, ceremonial and decorative objects, tools, weapons and archaeological artifacts. Outside, the living history museum recreates a Powhatan Indian village and Fort James. Watch woodworking, blacksmithing and cooking demonstrations. Follow the path to the pier and see replicas of the three ships that brought the colonists to Virginia in 1607.
The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown interprets the entire Revolutionary period from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the adoption of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. During a one-hour guided tour, you'll see a rare 1776 broadside printing of the Declaration of Independence, a recreation of a Continental Army camp complete with military drills and musket firing, and a farm whose landscape is unchanged since the 18th century.
Return to the ship at the pier in Norfolk, completing a fascinating day in Virginia.
