Enjoy a scenic harbor cruise to nearby Rose Island -- an excellent way to appreciate the colonial heritage, yachting history, and opulent estates of an area rich in maritime lore.
You will see remains of the 200-year-old Fort Hamilton and explore the fully-restored Rose Island lighthouse -- now an important wildlife sanctuary. First lit in 1870, the Rose Island lighthouse was lovingly restored to its original late-19th-century ambience in 1993 and is a classic example of American maritime architecture. Rose Island has been of strategic importance since the Revolutionary War. Today, it plays a vital role as home to a number of migrating birds. A visit to this 'living museum' offers an insight into a life spent tending the light and raising families in dedicated self-sufficiency.
Join a naturalist guide for a brief stroll through the lighthouse grounds before re-boarding the boat and cruising back to the pier.
Notes:
Tour operates rain or shine. Rose Island is exposed to the elements; wear comfortable, non-skid footwear. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer. Suitable only for those in good physical condition. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair.
