This guided tour connects you with Saysutchen Island on a deeper level.
Saysutchen is located just off the beautiful coast of Nanaimo -- an eight-minute ferry ride. A cultural interpretive walk is not only about seeing the sights, it’s about hearing the stories, understanding the traditions, and learning about the people who have shaped the land. This is especially true in Nanaimo, where the Snuneymuxw First Nation’s heritage is woven into the fabric of the community.
Learn about both the colonial and First Nations history, including medicinal plants and unwelcome invasive species.
Perhaps the highlight of the day is an entirely traditional salmon bake, where huge pieces of salmon are skewered on long sticks and placed downwind of an alderwood (or similar) fire. The heat and smoke permeate the fish meat giving it an incredible flavor while retaining its naturally moist texture. When the salmon is ready, dive into this magical taste of BC.
Notes:
Tour requires walking for one hour. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Not suitable for guests using a wheelchair.
