Walk with a friendly guide into the heart of Nanaimo's downtown. This is the second-largest city on Vancouver Island and boasts one of the most picturesque waterfronts in all of Canada.
Nanaimo is an outgoing charmer with a century of coal-mining history, a vibrant university scene, and a magnificent natural setting.
Stroll through the downtown core with its well-tended collection of heritage buildings. Stretch your legs and your imagination as you picture what life was like here in the late 1800s. Imposing Saint Andrew's United Church, with its tall bell tower and picturesque roofline, called the faithful to worship; the Occidental Hotel was dubbed "the first and the last;" and the Bastion was a former Hudson's Bay Company outpost -- today, it is the last fort standing in Canada.
Step inside the Nanaimo District Museum. A personable staffer welcomes you for a guided interactive journey of discovery. See what daily life was like and which objects were used for everyday living, including textiles, basketry, trade items, and fishing tools used by the Snunéymuxw First Nation.
Sample one of the island's most famous products -- a triple-layered sweet treat known as the Nanaimo Bar.
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
