Charming Nanaimo welcomes you for a panoramic drive through the city. See the picturesque waterfront with its inviting walkway overlooking the Strait of Georgia, the coastal mountains, and the Gulf Islands.
Once one of 250 similar forts built across Canada, the Hudson Bay Company Bastion is the last survivor of an era of fur traders, explorers and adventurers. It was built in 1853.
Explore the quaint Heritage District, where dozens of old storefronts and bars ooze turn-of-the-century charm. View the imposing 1914 Great National Land Building, the 1893 Free Press Building and the 1908 BC Tel Exchange for a sense of what the city was like during its coal-mining heyday.
In Cathedral Grove, Douglas fir, western hemlock and western red cedar tower 200 feet tall to form a dense canopy of fragrant boughs. Shafts of light beam through the treetops. Walk through the rainforest's many ecosystems and ponder the lifespan of these majestic old-growth trees.
Another of Vancouver Island's landmark attractions is Coombs Market. Shop for crafts and artwork while a small herd of friendly local goats grazes on the thick sod roof overhead. Not only are they a joy to watch, they are also a practical solution that keeps this Scandi-inspired building looking neat and trim.
A scenic motorcoach ride back to Nanaimo via Cathedral Grove and Vancouver Island's beautiful coastline.
