Take a guided tour of Sailor's Island. Abandoned by the last of its residents in 1963, the island is now a living museum. It chronicles the turn of the 20th century when life revolved around religion, Atlantic cod fishing, and the weather.
You will visit the Archipelitude Museum, housed in a building that once served as the island's schoolhouse. View artifacts from this period in Sailor Island's history. Explore the local maritime community, and learn about the shipwreck of the cargo ship Transpacific.
Finally, you'll visit the impressive Notre Dame des Marins -- Our Lady of the Sailors. This wooden church with an inverted hull-shaped vault is a testament to the faith and hope of the locals when fishing was still the island's lifeblood.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat.
