Head to Le Barbocheux in the Magdalen Islands, a distillery named for the island tradition of going from house to house for a small drink. Historically, more often than not, each glass was filled with bagosse — a homemade alcohol distilled from water, sugar and yeast and infused with a fruit or plant to add flavor. Foraged dandelions were a favorite and are still used today. Sylvie Langford and Léonce Arseneau introduce you to their company and invite you to taste their different bagosse products.
Next, from a roadside rest area at Dune-du-Sud, access a beautiful beach with red cliffs sculpted by the sea. Holes and caves in the cliffs fascinate visitors. Relax on the beach, take a walk, or take a swim.
The Cap-Alright Lighthouse offers a spectacular view over the grey cliffs of Plaisance Bay and the outline of Entry Island. The lighthouse is the last one built on the Islands, and it has changed little since its construction in 1928.
Chemin Pointe-Basse is a road peppered with many examples of traditional local architecture — its simple houses and barns are painted in a variety of bright colors reflecting Acadian and French origins. Some New England influences are also evident here.
Notes:
If you wish to swim, wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel. Swim at your own risk. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf.
