How about a beer that comes from a business ethos of maximum use of local raw materials? Welcome to A l'Abri de La Tempête Brewery -- Cap aux Meules' very own brewery that uses locally-malted barley, fresh flowers, marine algae and herbs to brew fun, full-flavored, distinctive beers. You will taste two different kinds while savoring a magnificent view from the beach.
Step inside La Vernière. This wooden church is the second-largest wooden church in North America and was built in 1876. It's a historical monument made from the wood of shipwrecks and is an important element of Madelinot heritage.
Visit La Côte, where several craft boutiques and the Eva coffeehouse hug the shoreline. Chat with the local fishermen and check out some serious Madelinot talent at the Le Flâneur Art Gallery. Paintings, handmade dolls, teas, and fresh bread baked in the outdoor oven are sold here.
The island's north coast is a series of spectacularly steep and jagged cliffs, and the Cap-Hérissé Lighthouse perches precariously on an eroding coastline. Don't miss this view that is memorable no matter the weather.
Notes:
Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm of Cap-aux-Meules. Transportation is by school bus; participants must be able to climb steep steps to (dis)embark the bus. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
