Depart Bar Harbor with a drive past the landmarks of the Gilded Age -- a time when the town was the playground of those whose names are still eminently recognizable today.
Acadia National Park's famous Park Loop Road is one of the most iconic drives on the East Coast, and the park itself is one of the most-visited National Parks in the United States.
Journey along the 27-mile Loop, along the ocean's edge past Sand Beach, Schooner Head Overlook, and the High Seas mansion built by a wealthy gentleman whose fiancée perished on the Titanic.
Keep an eye out for moose, black bear and white-tail deer as you travel through pine forests and past the Jordan Pond House, with a beautiful view of the Penobscot and Bubbles Mountains.
Continue past Otter Cliffs and the Gulf of Maine with beautiful views of the offshore islands.
You'll board a schooner for the second half of your tour. Sailing among the very same islands of Frenchman's Bay that you've just seen from your coach makes this a very Downeast experience. The people of Maine are very familiar with life on the water.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer.
