Depart Timaru port for the drive south to the quirky town of Oamaru. It is the Steampunk capital of New Zealand, paying homage to a retro culture that combines Victorian-style costumes and steam-era accessories with back-to-the-future-like technology. A panoramic drive through the town showcases its historical buildings. Oamaru has a long history and proud heritage, enriched by the passionate and perhaps slightly offbeat locals. You will find shops, galleries, and traditional crafts within some of the Southern Hemisphere’s most complete Victorian streetscapes and 19th-century architecture.
Back on the coach, you're headed to the Moeraki Boulders -- a group of large stones on Koekohe Beach near Moeraki. They are spherical concretions that have dropped out of the eroding coastal cliffs and rolled to their resting place on the beach. They are mostly tightly grouped, as if a giant has walked away from a game of marbles. The boulders are certainly one of the most fascinating and popular attractions on the South Island. Enjoy some free time to explore the boulders on New Zealand’s Otago coastline.
You will enjoy lunch in the region before relaxing on the journey back to Timaru port.
