Take in the mesmerizing north coast of Rabaul and learn all about this resilient town that was destroyed during a volcanic eruption in 1994. On a panoramic drive through Rabaul, your guide introduces you to the city highlights.
Your coach climbs the slopes of Tovanumbatir -- one of eight active vents in the Rabaul volcano caldera. Your destination is the Vulcanological Observatory, which closely monitors 14 active and 23 dormant volcanoes on Rabaul.
Take in awe-inspiring views of Simpson Harbour and the island's mountainous skyline as you make your way to a Tolai village. The inhabitants have adapted to life under an active volcano. You'll have time to browse and perhaps purchase some of the handicrafts created by the villagers. Your patronage is very welcome and makes a real difference to the economy here. US dollars (cash) are accepted.
Next, head for Mount Tavurvur, which violently erupted in 1937 and 1994. The hot springs here are a naturally occurring phenomenon, where the water is heated to a boil by an underwater volcanic vent. What lies beneath? If you really want to know, your guide will tell you.
Pass the old Rabaul Airport, destroyed by the 1994 volcanic eruption. At Air Wreck, you will view senescent Japanese warplanes half-buried in ash -- a testament to the power of the eruption.
A picturesque journey returns you to the port.
Notes:
Mt Tovanumbatir and Mt Tavurvur are active volcanoes; participate at your own risk. The Volcano Observatory is the lookout only, not the observatory building. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
