Newcastle is steeped in heritage, historical architecture, a thriving arts scene, and pride in its past.
Enjoy a panoramic drive through the city, passing the Lock Up, Customs House, the Convict Lumber Yard, the Newcastle Ocean Baths and Newcastle Beach. Your guide will also point out the magnificent Christ Church Cathedral and several historical convict-era buildings.
At the Fort Scratchley Historic Site, set out with a guide from the Fort Scratchley Historical Society to visit the barracks, the underground tunnels, and some above-ground defense structures. Learn the history of the fort's involvement in World War II -- it was the first and only Australian fort to return fire on an enemy ship in wartime.
Free time at the Newcastle Museum allows you to browse the exhibits at your own pace.
