Venture outside the city to discover lush landscapes, rolling green hills and the peaceful nature reserve of Parc Forestier.
Your tour begins with a short drive to Parc Zoologique et Forestier, located in the hinterland overlooking Nouméa. Spot feathered friends, flora and fauna as you take a peaceful guided tour through this 85-acre nature reserve.
At an elevation of 548 feet, you’ll enjoy the changing backdrop of ocean views in the distance as you walk along the well-marked trails, viewing the ponds, lakes, native shrubs and abundant bird life along the way.
You’ll spot a huge variety of wild and domestic birds, such as the roussette (fruit bat), notou, parakeets and the rare cagou. The latter is a flightless bird and is the symbol of New Caledonia; its call is often mistaken for a barking dog.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring insect repellent and bottled water. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
