Walking is one of the best ways to appreciate Moreton Island’s environmental features and to discover some of its many wildlife habitats.
Join a Tangalooma Ranger and tackle one of Moreton Island’s many hiking trails. The desert trail is 2.5 miles (4 km) long and features an elevation gain of approximately 300 feet. The trail takes you along the beach, through the forest and out to the desert. Here, allow yourself to be wowed by spectacular views of the sand dunes.
More than 180 bird species have been recorded on the island, including seabirds, waders, forest birds such as the laughing kookaburra, and birds of prey such as the whistling kite and white-bellied sea eagle. Australian pelicans, pied cormorants and white-faced heron are among the more commonly seen resident birds on the beaches of Moreton Island.
