Lifou is much more than just beautiful beaches and swaying palm trees, although those things are top priority, too. The island is a coral atoll, home to dense tropical rainforest and intriguing secret grottos.
Set out on an informative, guided nature walk highlighting interesting flora and fauna, including plants that are relied upon for medicinal purposes in Kanak culture.
Back on the road, you’ll head to a breathtaking secret grotto (cave) for a guided tour by flashlight. One of Lifou’s many dramatic cave complexes, this deep and winding example is full of ancient fossilized coral and features stunning stalactites and stalagmites.
Back in daylight, enjoy a refreshing glass of lemonade and a snack of fresh fruit.
At a nearby quarry, watch a demonstration of traditional hunting techniques, including coconut crab netting and wild pig hunting. It’s a fascinating lesson that shows how the indigenous people survive and thrive using the limited resources they have on hand.
Notes:
Tour requires extensive walking. Terrain includes rocks, uneven surfaces, steps, inclines and roots. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Local custom requires removing hats and shoes before entering houses. Modest attire is required for visiting local villages; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; short shorts and swimwear are not allowed. It is important to ask permission before taking an individual’s photograph. The transportation is not air-conditioned or equipped with a PA system. Local escorts and students will act as guides. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up. Restroom facilities are rustic.
