The magnificent Haleakala volcano is the highest point on the island of Maui, at 10,032 feet above sea level. All of Manhattan Island could fit inside its crater, with room to spare, and the Empire State Building could be vertically stacked four times without reaching the top. This dormant volcano last erupted in 1790.
Travel up the mountain through Maui's diverse scenery to Haleakala National Park -- a favorite in the islands for its sweeping panoramic views. The crater measures 7.5 miles long, 2.5 miles wide and 21 miles around. From the viewpoint at the crater rim, appreciate firsthand the immensity of this landmark.
After your visit to Haleakala, enjoy an island-style lunch at a local venue.
Next, you'll visit the Maui Ocean Center -- the largest tropical aquarium in the western hemisphere. Its displays offer fine examples of the brilliantly-colored marine life found in Hawaii's rich waters. The exhibits include the Living Reef, a Marine Mammal Discovery Center, a Touch Pool and the Living Journey, where you can walk through a 54-foot underwater transparent tube surrounded by all matter of marine life, including sharks, the great hunters of the sea. Also experience the immersive, cutting-edge audio-video experience of the Humpbacks of Hawaii in the state of the art Sphere.
Notes:
Temperatures are cool on Mt Haleakala; bring a windproof jacket. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Guests who have a heart condition or respiratory difficulties should note that the elevation of the crater rim is 9,740 feet above sea level. Views are not guaranteed as they are weather and atmospheric conditions permitting. The road to the summit is a series of winding switchbacks; guests who suffer from motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. After the tour, there is an optional drop-off at Hilo Hattie's for shopping.
Maui Ocean Center Update:
Starting in May 2024, Maui Ocean Center will transition to a cashless payment system where only debit/credit cards will be accepted for purchases of souvenirs, food, and other items. Please remember to bring a credit or debit card if you plan on making any purchases at the Maui Ocean Center.
