Death and destruction are part of Honiara’s history, laid bare in the battlefield sites that are poignant reminders of the World War II action seen in the Solomon Islands -- specifically here on Guadalcanal. Japan occupied the Solomon Islands as part of a plan to encircle the West Pacific and tighten the noose on Australia. Your guide will tell you all about Guadalcanal, its strategic location close to Australia, and its terrible war stories.
Depart the pier for a panoramic drive, in the company your guide, to Henderson Field. This former Japanese airfield was a highly sought-after piece of land, named after an American pilot who was the first casualty at the Battle of Midway, claimed eventually by the Americans and, today, the site of Honiara International Airport.
Continue to Bloody Ridge, the site of a ferocious encounter between the two sides. Along the way, your guide will share hair-raising tales of the historical events that occurred at these battlegrounds.
Conclude with a visit to the US War Memorial, commemorating those who fought, died in, and survived the bitter battles of Guadalcanal.
