The canoe and Kundu drum play a huge part in the lives of the Milne Bay Province inhabitants. Both are meticulously crafted from special woods, adhering strictly to custom to achieve the best results and appease the gods.
The locals celebrate these elements with the National Canoe & Kundu Festival -- an event that attracts around 3,000 participants. Today, you'll have an opportunity to see a mini festival arranged exclusively for Holland America Line guests, offering the colors and sounds of this unique and entertaining event. The festival is rich in performances, with traditional dance groups coming from far and wide (including parts of the Papuan Region) in a mix of colorful and intriguing costumes.
Don't miss the spectacle of the canoes and Kundu drums. Browse through the stalls of arts and crafts and shop for souvenirs, locally made gifts, and some astonishing artwork created by contemporary local artists. It's truly a melting pot of Papua New Guinean culture in action.
Your ticket includes one round-trip transfer to the location where the festival is recreated. This is the perfect shaded backdrop with places to relax as the day unfolds.
Transfers travel regularly back and forth between the festival and the ship.
