Experience a traditional welcome, powhiri onto Te Ohako Marae from local Ngai Tawhiri Ngai Te Kete of Ngati Ruapani and Rongowhakaata people. Enter Te Kiko o te Rangi (the meeting house) to hear the stories of the land, the people, and the house Manaakitanga.
The process of showing respect, generosity and care for the people is a very important part of this tour, and in true tradition a small kai, food offering will be served.
The tour will then drive by Whakato Marae before visiting Toko Toru Tapu Church (one of the most important Maori churches in New Zealand), with exceptional whakairo (carved wooden panels). You will be whakatau (informally welcomed) into the church and learn the history of the church and carvings.
Notes:
Venues visited may change depending on availability (marae are used for tangi - funerals). Tour does not operate on Holidays.
