A Heart for Community:
Connect with the heart and soul of a vibrant community. Whether you're meeting friendly locals, encountering heirloom cultures, engaging with Native peoples, exploring hidden corners, or discovering beloved eateries, let lasting memories begin with warmth, hospitality, and genuine connection.
Experience a traditional powhiri welcome ritual on the Te Ohako Marae (gathering place). This is the tribal land of the Ngai Tawhiri and Rongowhakaata people. Enter the meeting house to learn about the land, the people, and manaakitanga (hospitality). The process of showing respect, generosity and care for people is a very important part of this experience. Enjoy a small taste of kai (food) with your hosts.
You will drive past the Whakato Marae before visiting Toko Toru Tapu Church. This is one of the most important Maori churches in New Zealand, with exceptional whakairo carved wooden panels. You will be informally welcomed into the church to learn about the church building and its carvings.
Notes:
Marae are used for funerals; venues visited may change if a funeral is taking place. Tour does not operate on holidays.
