A panoramic drive takes you to Devonport, Burnie's neighboring city.
You will visit the Maritime Museum, aptly housed in the Pilot Station built for the Devonport Harbourmaster in 1920. An extensive collection of flags, paintings, charts and photographs illustrates Tasmanian maritime history.
Next, you will explore Home Hill. This Australian National Trust property, built in 1916, was the residence of former Australian Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, his wife and their twelve children. A rich collection of personal material provides an unexpected insight into Australian politics during some momentous mid-20th-century events.
Now, you're headed to the Don River Railway Museum. Hop aboard the 3'6"-gauge line run by rail enthusiast volunteers. Your 30-minute round-trip train ride over part of the former Melrose Line between Don Junction and Paloona features either a 1940s ex-TGR rail car or a diesel locomotive pulling heritage carriages. The rolling stock is either already restored or in line to be refurbished in the on-site workshop, also run by volunteers.
