The Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot entirely in New Zealand with as many as nine individual units filming in remote and beautiful areas. This easy full day tour features the best of this dazzling landscape! You will be met at the pier in Timaru by a friendly local tour guide who will travel with you to provide entertaining and informative commentary on all aspects of Canterbury and the Lord of the Rings.
Your day begins with a scenic journey over the farmland of the Canterbury Plains and through to the small rural town of Mt Somers. Keep your camera handy because the views are non-stop. Here, you'll have the opportunity to take advantage of a charming kiwi tradition: morning tea.
Enjoy the setting: a friendly, community ran Hall and meet the locals!
Continuing your motorcoach sightseeing drive you'll head inland towards the heart of the spectacular Southern Alps. Get out and stretch your legs when you arrive at Lake Clearwater but don’t forget to bring along your camera. Enjoy the relaxing stroll to the lake viewpoint where you can take in the panorama of mountains, forest, and a small village of holiday homes: the perfect backdrop for this alpine jewel. The breathtaking views over the lake to the Southern Alps will leave you with lasting memories.
The next stop on your itinerary is the home of Edoras, where you will experience first-hand why this remote and beautiful location was chosen for the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy. You will have free time to explore this magical landscape and even have the opportunity to have your photo taken with Lord of the Rings replica swords.
You'll then travel a short distance to your lunch location. Sit down to a delicious picnic lunch, including gourmet sandwiches, chocolates, sweet slice, fruit, a glass or two of New Zealand bubbly, tea, coffee and juice. Nestled at the base of the Southern Alps, enjoy fantastic scenery in New Zealand's famous High Country, so go ahead and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful setting.
But soon it will be time to start your journey back to your ship, sightseeing back across the Canterbury Plains to Timaru.
