Travel from the pier into the city of Adelaide, passing the central business district as you make your way into the Adelaide Hills.
Winding roads lead past orchards and vineyards to pretty township of Hahndorf nestled in the foothills. Founded by German Lutherans in 1839 it is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. The main street is shaded by century-old elm trees and features old-fashioned cottages, plenty of souvenir shops, craft outlets and galleries. There is still a strong German flavor in Hahndorf, most apparent in the bakeries that line the bustling main street. Several boutique cellar doors have recently opened in the main street, and trendy eateries serve the freshest and best local produce.
Enjoy plenty of free time to explore the shops selling local pottery, jewelry, leather goods, and ironwork or simply stroll among the charming streets.
Purchase lunch (at your own expense) before you head up Mount Lofty to enjoy great views of Adelaide (weather permitting). At 2,100 feet above sea level, the summit offers dramatic views of the city sprawling below and the breathtaking South Australia coast.
Note:
Please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and jacket, plenty of biodegradable sunscreen and bring bottled water. Order of site may differ on the day.
