The Hakka villages, scattered over a triangular mountainous region in southwestern Fujian, were built between the 12th and 20th centuries. Their buildings are made of rammed earth and feature gun emplacements for defense. This fascinating tour is specially designed for you to discover the stories and legends behind the spectacular hakka earthen forts and the people living in them.
You will set out from the pier on a 2½-hour motor coach drive to the hakka village of Dadi. A boxed lunch will be provided for you to eat on the way. At the village, visit the Eryi Hakka. Unique in layout and space features, the Eryi building is renowned for the creative defensive system and its special structure differs from most of the hakka buildings in Fujian Province. It features exquisite ornamentation inside the building. The Dongyang Lou Hakka is square in shape and boasts excellent feng shui. It covers an area of 23,000 square feet, with 36 bedrooms and four halls. Corridors connect the rooms on each floor. Its design has shifted from a defensive function to comfortable communal living.
Finally, you will visit the Nanyang Lou Hakka Building Building. Cleverly combining the unit-style and corridor-style, the building is an outstanding example of hakka for the Fulao community—an important branch of the Han ethnic group in Fujian Province and a National Historic Site. Return to the motor coach and head back to the pier.
Please note: Travel time to Dadi is 2½ hours each way. Tour requires approximately 75 minutes of walking and negotiating approximately 70 stairs; not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wear casual, lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes. Expect crowding at some locations. Tour operates rain or shine.
