From Kobe’s pier, you’ll begin exploring Kyoto.
You’ll take an exciting high-speed train ride on the Shinkansen Bullet Train to Kyoto station and head to Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavillion) for an outside view. This elaborate building began life as a villa built by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa in 1397, during the Muromachi period. Its second and third stories are covered in pure gold foil.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, continue sightseeing by motorcoach and visit the Heian Shrine -- a Shinto structure dedicated to the first and last emperors of Kyoto.
Finally, you’ll stop at the Kiyomizu Temple -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main hall was constructed in the 17th century and is famous for its spectacular location -- it hangs over the side of a cliff.
After a panoramic drive through Kyoto, transfer back to the pier in Kobe.
Notes:
Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and many steps. Wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on the Shinkansen bullet train. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Building maintenance is ongoing at the Heian Shrine. Tour sequence may vary.
