From Kobe's pier, you'll begin exploring Kyoto.
You'll take an exciting high-speed train ride on the Shinkansen Bullet Train to Kyoto station. After that, we will go to Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavillion) for an outside view. This elaborate building began life as a villa built by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa in 1397, during the Muromachi period. Later, the house was converted into a temple. It is three stories tall, with the second and third stories completely covered in pure gold foil.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, continue sightseeing by motorcoach. You will also visit the Heian Shrine -- a famous structure dedicated to Emperor Kammu, the founder of Kyoto, and to Emperor Komei -- the last Emperor of Kyoto.
Finally, you'll stop at the Kiyomizu Temple -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main hall was constructed in the 17th century and is famous for its spectacular location, hanging over the side of a cliff!
After a panoramic drive through Kyoto, transfer back to the pier in Kobe.
Notes:
Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. The visit to the Kiyomizu Temple involves climbing several steps. Tour is not suitable for guests requiring the use of a wheelchair as they can not be accommodated on the Shinkansen bullet train. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Building maintenance is ongoing at Heian Shrine. Tour order may vary.
