Tsuruga will charm you with a host of scenic, cultural and historical sights, and this exciting tour will introduce you to many of the city's top attractions.
Begin with a motorcoach drive to the beachside Kehi-no-Matsubara Pine Grove, voted one of the most scenic spots in Japan. Covering almost 100 acres, this nationally-designated Site of Scenic Beauty is lush with Japanese red and black pines and is known for its dramatic contrast between the white sand and the green trees.
Continue to the iconic Kehi Jingu Shrine -- the largest and most important shrine in the Hokuriku region since its foundation in AD 702. Although it was mostly destroyed in 1945, its one surviving structure is a 36-foot-tall red wooden tori gate registered as an Important Cultural Property.
Stop for photos at the Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse -- one of Fukui Prefecture's most prominent brick structures.
You will also visit the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum dedicated to diplomat Chiune Sugihara and his brave efforts to ensure that Tsuruga welcomed Jewish refugees with "visas for life" in the 1940s.
Conclude your day with a stroll through more than 70 stalls at Nihonkai Sakana-machi Fish Market, the largest seafood market on the Sea of Japan. Peruse the specialty items and restaurants offering sushi, grilled mackerel, and other delicacies (at your own expense).
Return to the pier with some great photos of your day out in Tsuruga.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Terrain includes sand and/or uneven surfaces. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars.
