Travel back in time on this fascinating tour focusing on the heritage and culture of the Fukui Prefecture.
A scenic one-hour drive from Tsuruga brings you to the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins. Here, stroll among the partially reconstructed ruins of Ichijodani Castle Town to gain a deeper understanding of life during the peak of the Muromachi period. Once home to more than 10,000 inhabitants, the town was destroyed in 1573. Excavation and restoration began in 1967, and you'll see the walled residences of samurai, craftsmen and merchants. Several interiors have been furnished with authentic period pieces and mannequins to depict life in these homes.
Head to Eiheiji Temple -- an active monastery and head of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism. Located deep in the mountains and founded by Zen Master Dōgen, the temple is now home to more than 100 monks who practice shikantaza (single-minded sitting). Enter through the grand reception hall and follow covered walkways into key rooms -- Buddha Hall, the Founder's Hall and the main lecture hall.
Continue to a local restaurant for Shojin-style lunch -- vegetarian Buddhist cuisine before returning to Tsuruga.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Photography/video is not permitted at Eiheiji Temple. Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and short skirts are not allowed. Shoes and hats must be removed before you enter the temple(s). Terrain includes more than 200 stairs and/or uneven surfaces. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
