Jakarta’s history began in the 14th century. Visit the market to learn how these traditional trading venues are still an integral part of the city’s character, tucked among its modern, air-conditioned shopping malls and well-stocked supermarkets. Many Indonesians still prefer to shop here.
At the old port of Sunda Kelapa, catch a view of the amazing Phinisi schooners made out of Sulawesi ironwood by Bugis Boat Builders. These beautiful ships comprise the world’s last wind-powered commercial sailing fleet. They dock here at the quay, as they have done for centuries, and are used to transport the wide range of the Indonesian archipelago’s bounty from island to island.
Visit the Istiqlal Mosque, built in 1978.
Perhaps the highlight of your tour is a visit to President Obama’s elementary school. You’ll see a statue of Barack Obama -- a depiction of when he was just 10 years old. Enjoy a refreshing cup of java coffee or tea and a local snack as you spend time with the school principal and children who are proud of their association with the illustrious former alumnus.
Notes:
The school is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 1pm; it is closed Sundays and public holidays. If the school is closed, you will view it from the outside only, and the Principal and children will not be present; refreshments will be served at a local restaurant instead.
