Jakarta’s history began in the 14th century, when it was founded as a small harbor town.
Visit the market to learn how these traditional trading venues are an integral part of the city’s character, tucked among its modern, air-conditioned shopping malls and well-stocked supermarkets. The traditional market is usually open from early in the morning until 8am. Many Indonesians still prefer to buy produce at the local market as generations have done before them. Jakarta also has markets specializing in items such as gold, gemstones, textiles, flowers and birds.
Visit the old port of Sunda Kelapa and catch a view of the amazing Phinisi schooners, made out of Sulawesi ironwood by Bugis Boat Builders. These beautiful ships comprise the world’s last wind-powered commercial sailing fleet. They dock here at the quay here as they have done for centuries and are used to transport the wide range of the Indonesian archipelago’s bounty from island to island.
Continue with a visit to the Istiqlal Mosque, which was built in 1978 and is one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia. Next, the highlight of your tour is a visit to President Obama’s elementary school. You’ll see the new statue of Barack Obama—a depiction of when he was just 10 years old. A refreshing cup of java coffee or tea and a local snack will be served as you spend time with the school principal and children who are proud of their association with the illustrious former alumnus.
Notes:
The school is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 1pm. It is closed Sundays and public holidays. On days that the school is closed, you will view it from the outside only—the Principal and children will not be present—and the refreshment will be served at local restaurant.
