A scenic 2.5-hour via the new expressway brings you to Phnom Penh.
Explore the many attractions of Cambodia's capital city -- a bustling center of culture, art, architecture and religion.
Visit the Royal Palace with a walk to the Silver Pagoda. Its floor is made up of 5,329 silver tiles. When the radical Khmer Rouge party took control in 1975, its leader, Pol Pot, lived here. Enter and explore the interior in more depth; however, some areas can only be observed from the outside.
Lunch is included at one of the city's foremost restaurants empowering local women.
Cambodia's religion is exemplified during a visit to Wat Phnom Penh Temple.
Drive past the Independence Monument and, to learn more about Phnom Penh's recent dark history, visit the former school that the Khmer Rouge turned into the S-21 detention and torture center. It is now home to the remarkable Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.
On a much happier note, the Art Deco-style Central Market is a heritage-listed building featuring heaping stalls and interesting shopping.
Notes:
Modest attire is required for visiting the Royal Palace; no fitted or collarless tops are allowed; shirts/blouses must cover shoulders; trousers must cover knees; shorts and skirts above the knee are not permitted. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
