A day trip from Sihanoukville to the Kirirom region of Cambodia promises a memorable adventure filled with scenic beauty, local culture, and immersive experiences.
The journey begins with a comfortable bus ride along the new highway from Sihanoukville, which offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. As you pass through rural villages and lush landscapes, the road gradually leads you into the heart of Kirirom, a beautiful national park nestled in the Cardamom Mountains.
Upon arrival, you will take a ‘Koyun’ (two wheeled tractor or Iron Buffalo) and trailer to the community centre the next part of your journey takes you on a guided hike up through the jungle to the Chombok Community Waterfall. The hike, set against a backdrop of towering trees and vibrant green foliage, offers a refreshing escape into nature. Along the way, your guide will point out local flora and fauna, giving insight into the rich biodiversity of this pristine environment. The sound of birds chirping and the rustling of leaves underfoot add to the serene atmosphere as you approach the waterfall.
Once at the waterfall, you'll have the chance to relax, take in the breathtaking scenery, and snap photos of the cascading water surrounded by lush jungle. The cool mist from the waterfall provides a refreshing respite, making it the perfect place to unwind.
After the hike, you’ll enjoy a delicious traditional Khmer lunch served family-style, where you'll be able to sample local specialties such as fresh fish, rice, vegetables, and flavorful sauces. The meal is a wonderful opportunity to experience the warmth of Cambodian hospitality, with everyone gathering around a large table to share food and stories.
Following lunch, you'll visit a local community workshop where artisans demonstrate the art of making traditional Cambodian bracelets. You'll see how they intricately weave threads and beads into unique, handmade pieces that carry cultural significance. This is followed by a demonstration of cooking sticky rice in bamboo, a time-honored method of preparing rice that infuses it with a rich, smoky flavor.
With your belly full and your cultural curiosity satisfied, the trip ends with a relaxing drive back to the port in Sihanoukville, where you'll be dropped off in the afternoon, with memories of a day spent immersed in the natural beauty and traditions of rural Cambodia.
