Discover a traditional Japanese shrine and a beautiful garden on this introduction to Sasebo.
Depart the pier and drive to Mifuneyama Rakuen Garden, located just outside Takeo Onsen in Saga Prefecture. It occupies 37 acres and was designed and completed in by Shigeyoshi Nabeshima -- the 28th ruler of the Takeo Domain -- as part of his weekend home. As you stroll the garden paths admiring the hundreds of thousands of trees and flowers, keep an eye out for the statues of the 500 disciples of Buddha scattered throughout the garden.
Next, you will visit the Yutoku Inari Shrine. This shrine is one of the three most famous shrines dedicated to Inari. It was built in 1687, upon the request of Kazanin Manko-hime -- the wife of Lord Nabeshima Naotomo, who ruled the domain of Hizen Kashima. Follow a walking trail into the woods and up to a small shrine at the top of the hill offering views of the city and nearby Ariake Sea.
After your visit to the shrine, re-board your coach and return to the pier.
