Visit the Kek Lok Si Temple—the largest Chinese Buddhist temple in Malaysia. Also known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss, it is infinitely intriguing from the start. Most visitors approach the temple via a stairway, the roof of which provides shelter to a multitude of shops selling souvenirs and other mostly secular commodities. Watch for the so-called Liberation Pond. In the Buddhist tradition of merit-making, turtles are released into freedom here, albeit in a limited scope. The temple itself consists of several large halls for assembly and prayer. Statues of Buddha, various Bodhisattvas, and Chinese gods are venerated here. The Seven Tier Pagoda incorporates Chinese, Thai and Burmese architecture. Nearby, Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera) is 2,750 feet tall. It is a popular among locals and visitors alike. A famous Swiss-made funicular tram whisks visitors to the peak, offering a magnificent panoramic view of Georgetown, the mainland and Penang Bridge. At the summit, you'll find a mosque and a Hindu temple.
Notes:
You must remove your shoes to enter the temple(s).
