A two-hour panoramic drive brings you to the Shakotan Peninsula, traveling past pleasant scenic views and iconic imagery. The Shakotan Peninsula is located on the Sea of Japan and forms a beautiful coastline with quite a diverse ecosystem and associated wildlife. It is surrounded by clear water whose particular shade is called 'Shakotan blue' due to its high degree of clarity. The mountainous terrain of the peninsula extends about 20 miles northwest. This was a well-known herring-fishing ground in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Even today, fishing is still a primary industry, and the fresh sea urchins from here are heralded as particularly tasty.
Arrive at Cape Kamui, located at the northwest edge of the peninsula and considered its most scenic spot. In its heyday, shipping companies dubbed Cape Kamui one of Hokkaido's three most dangerous shorelines. Hike along the designated trails here, enjoying fantastic panoramic sea vistas.
