Depart the pier for a one-hour scenic drive to Kasuisai Temple, one of the largest temples in the Tokai district. Established in 1394 by Zen Master Jochu Tengin, the extensive temple compound has several buildings, including a main hall, shoin, and abbot’s residence. It is also known as the flower temple for the perfect peonies that pop up here in the Spring, white Japanese orchids in Summer, and maple leaves in the Fall.
Kakegawa Castle was originally built by Asahina Yasuhiro in 1513. In 1994, sections of the innermost bailey, including some walls, a yagura and the keep, were reconstructed using original methods. Primarily due to its historical significance, the site is now included on the 100 Fine Castles of Japan list.
Your tour concludes with a stop at Roadside Station Kakegawa, where you will have some free time to stroll about and purchase souvenirs before returning to the pier.
