Depart the pier for a scenic 80-minute drive to Nihondaira Park Outlook. Designated as a Prefecture Natural Park, this scenic spot affords panoramic vistas of sparkling Suruga Bay and dramatic Mt Fuji.
From here, board an aerial ropeway (cable car) for bird’s-eye views as you are whisked up the mountainside to the Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. Dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the famous leader credited with bringing peace and unity to Japan after a long period of civil war. The picturesque shrine complex has an extensive collection of vermilion buildings ornately decorated and constructed in the Shinto shrine style of architecture.
Continue inside and up the stone steps to the drum tower and stables, pausing to admire a series of ancient copper lanterns. You’ll soon reach Shaden, the main building. This striking wooden complex is comprised of three sections. All three are architecturally diverse and elaborately decorated.
Lastly, you will head to Yaizu Fish Market, a shopping mall with 70 souvenir shops selling local products such as seafood and tea. You can find fresh seafood such as tuna, bonito and dried or processed fish, as well as a variety of different tea sellers.
Return to the pier afterward.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. There are approximately 120 steep steps at Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
