Begin your journey back in time with a scenic 70-minute drive to Sunpu Castle Park. Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu built the castle in 1585, and the remains hint at its former grandeur. The castle was surrounded by moats and stone walls whose size and strength can still be appreciated. The castle’s gate and turret have been restored. Inside the turret is a reference library with restoration documents and excavated models.
From the park, continue to Shizuoka Sengen Shrine -- a complex of seven shrines. The three main shrines have been restored. The Sengen Shrine is also noted for its dramatic architectural style and extensive use of gold leaf, lacquer and wood carvings.
Lastly, you will head to Yaizu Fish Market, a shopping mall with 70 souvenir shops selling local products such as seafood and tea. You can find fresh seafood such as tuna, bonito and dried or processed fish, as well as a variety of different tea sellers.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shizuoka Sengen Shrine is currently undergoing renovation work, and some parts of the shrine may not be accessible due to construction at the time of your visit.
